SMA Mayor Presents First Government Report

San Miguel Mayor, Luis Alberto Villarreal García, read the first government report in Plaza Insurgentes to a considerable number of people in San Miguel.

He affirmed that each action carried out during his first year has his word and commitment. He says he loves San Miguel and has worked from his first day, visiting its 500+ rural communities to not only bring hope but a better quality of life. “We were clear that with strategy and joining efforts we could overcome the problems. Only in this way could we recover the dignity and heroism of our land, only in this way could we return San Miguel to its true owners: to the people who struggle to make it great,” he said.
Accompanied by Guanajuato governor, Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo, Deputy Ricardo Villarreal and judicial representative, Katya Soto Escamilla, the mayor explained that one of his first commitments was to restore security, through greater professionalization of the police, better salaries and equipment, more patrols and more technology. He again highlighted the C4 Center which can help with emergencies and the 321 video surveillance cameras that constantly watch over the city. This makes SMA “the city with the most video surveillance in Guanajuato”, with one camera for every 185 inhabitants. Other actions include promoting sustainable development, which preserve the environment for future generations, including the effort to keep the city clean, through the collection of garbage at night and placing 120 new containers and 1,200 trash cans in strategic points of the city. All this while dozens of residents continue to protest some of those “sustainable development” practices and environmental preservation regarding 30 mature trees on Calzada de Guadalupe.  In the year, over 31,000 trees were donated in reforestation efforts. He harshly condemned the use of plastic, styrofoam and plastic straws.
The “San Miguel Iluminado” project was mentioned, which added 12,500 LED lights, making it the first city with its lighting this way (though it was not clarified first in where).
San Miguel de Allende became the American Capital of Culture 2019 and is one of the best cities to live in, according to various international recognitions, and which offers a decent life for its inhabitants.
Villarreal García stressed that, at the request of the local residents, holiday rental houses offered on digital platforms such as Airbnb are now being  regulated, making it the first municipality in the country to do so. “Tourism should not mean abuse,” he said.
Education is transcendental for the development of societies; the City Council has provided support to education, which they endorse with the rehabilitation of basic education schools and historical investment in infrastructure:  a new elementary school in Palmita de Landeta, a secondary school in Jardines II and a new CETAC high school, all with a capacity of 1,200 students. In the coming weeks the first stone of the most important social infrastructure work in the history of the municipality will be laid: a campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He stressed the coordination and accompaniment of the governor of the State, Diego Sinhue Rodríguez, to whom he expressed his gratitude and total support from the people of San Miguel to take Guanajuato to the next level.
