UNAM Coming to SMA
The rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Enrique Graue Wiechers, signed a letter of intent with the governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo, and the mayor of San Miguel de Allende, Luis Alberto Villarreal García, in order to establish an academic facility in SMA. UNAM is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious universities in Mexico.
The university, which will be built in an area of 4.5 hectares, will offer educational services, carry out research, offer specialized training and promote technological development. The governor of Guanajuato thanked the opportunity to have the UNAM in San Miguel de Allende. “The best investment that can be made is in education, and who better to do it with than the National University and in the best city.”
The first stage will consist of a two-story building with classrooms, a media library, science and computer labs, as well as a multidisciplinary area to provide dentistry and physiotherapy services.
The new university space will be able to house the distance learning baccalaureate with the UNAM curriculum as well offer bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate degrees, research activities and dissemination of culture. The aim is for UNAMSMA to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and projects with other national and international institutions that promote continuous education through courses, workshops, diploma courses and other activities. It also aims to preserve the diversity and biological wealth that prevails in SMA through the use and sustainable management of natural areas.
Governor Rodríguez Vallejo explained, “with this new investment, a great panorama opens up for the northeast of the state, and it will be possible to provide service, even to other states, such as Queretaro. Hopefully we can lay the first stone soon.”
Mayor Luis Alberto Villarreal emphasized that this is a project long caressed by the University, the state and the San Miguel society. This campus means development and commitment to the following generations. Similarly, “it means the opportunity to become a university city. Having UNAM is a privilege and a high responsibility.” In the polygon of 4.5 hectares, donated in 2015, there will be an initial tripartite investment of state government, municipal government, and the University because “we want to invest in talent, creativity and the construction of a better society,” he concluded.
