A Steak Dinner to Remember

Everything is ready for the “Beefsteak Dinner” at Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada benefitting the Red Cross of San Miguel de Allende.

Chefs Katsuji Tanabe, Oscar Meza, Jose Sosa and John Tesar prepare grills and more grills to delight all attendees for the steak dinner to benefit the Cruz Roja, San Miguel de Allende, September 7th, at Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada. Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada will host a special event with exceptional chefs.

Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada has just been named on of the 5 best hotels in Mexico by Travel + Leisure magazine.   The Spanish word “beefsteak” (steak) is very unique, often a very specific cut of meat.

Katsuji Tanabe, creator of Mexikosher and who lives in the United States, has specialized in the subject of Kosher and Japanese meat and food. Katsuji, who has a Japanese father and a Mexican mother, is proud of his roots. “Speaking of the history of this event, steak dinners have been around since the late 1800s, emerging for the first time in New York City. The dinner began as a mostly male event, the very Toby Club”. John Freudenthaler and his team have researched the past of “Beefsteak Dinners.” “For reference on what a steak dinner used to be like, take a look at the article: All you can hold for five dollars, by Joseph Mitchell, published in The New Yorker in 1939. The dark, damp saloons, taverns and cellars were where Beefsteak Dinners were celebrated when prohibition was a pressing issue.”

John Tesar, writer, lecturer, creator of concepts and projects and knives in the United States adds: “The Beefsteak Dinners began as a dinner only for men during prohibition, but during the 1920s, the 19th amendment gave women suffrage and the 18th   amendment allowed drinking in public between men and women; women could join the festivities and drink. There was a change in the menu items, adding saladas and cups of fruit to cater to women. A wider range of alcoholic beverages apart from whiskey and beer also developed. Clothing changed and men began to wear suits and mostly tuxedos, clothing that makes this experience unique today.

Jose Sosa of Gibsons Italia adds: “We received the invitation from John and Ulysses who told us about the concept of fundraising and we immediately signed up. The purpose of the Beefsteak Dinner originated among the working class as a celebration meal. Some say that the butchers began the practice: drain the cuts of meat after work to eat them at the end of the workday with friends. Whatever the reason, they eventually became a way to fundraise for politicians or to honor friends or celebrities. Years later, you still have to support.”

Oscar Meza, famous YouTuber and gastronomic media figure, tells us that he and his teammates are delighted to support the Red Cross of San Miguel de Allende and that they are designing an event to be remembered. We are excited to share the kitchen in such a beautiful city and in a hotel with such recognition.
