Tianguis Market Extortionists Arrested; Sent to Prison
The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) filed an indictment for the crime of extortion against merchants in San Miguel de Allende against Daniel “N” and Jesús Manuel “N”; the latter was a police officer in Celaya. They will remain in preventative detention while they undergo criminal proceedings.
The Regional Prosecutor’s Office D were notified of the criminal acts through a complaint, which stated that several people of a criminal group went to the “Placita” (where the Tuesday Market or Tianguis de los Martes is held) and charged merchants for the right to sell at the market.
The Criminal Investigation Agency of the Prosecutor’s Office carried out investigative measures, gathering information on the identity of the suspects and their criminal activities. Later, on July 9th, an operation was deployed where the accused were caught red-handed with various envelopes full of cash, which they had extorted from the merchants earlier.
After their arrest, the Public Prosecutor’s Office integrated the file with evidence gathered from the proceedings and, together with the testimony of an affected person. The accused were brought before a judge and declared the detention was legal and an accusation was made.
The defense asked for an extension and this Wednesday afternoon, when the extension had exhausted, the hearing was resumed. The agents of the Prosecutor’s Office obtained a precautionary measure of preventive detention for the crime of extortion and favorable resolution from the judge to the request to link them to criminal proceedings.
