The Guerritas Fight On

To continue celebrating the Santa Cruz (Holy Cross) in the Valle del Maiz, the traditional “guerritas” (warriors) performed this afternoon. They represent a one-of-a-kind tradition: is a fight between soldiers that represent the Spanish Conquistadors and Indigenous Chichimecas.

These confrontations represent those that took place 500 years ago in San Miguel. Due to the space limitations in Centro, the event is held in the parking lot of “La Placita”, just outside the Tuesday Market. Crowds encircle the soldiers as bare-backed and painted men grapple with those in more modern military uniforms. Canons sometimes make an appearance as do short sword fights. It is certainly an event to be witnessed!
