New 200 Peso Bill – Don’t be Caught off Guard!

At 1pm today, the Bank of Mexico officially released the new 200-peso bill today. The new 200-peso banknote is also green and very closely resembles the current banknote. The main change is the replacement of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz changing to the heroes of Independence, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and José María Morelos y Pavón.

The new bill also contains new security elements to prevent counterfeiting with a watermark in the denomination of 200 pesos.

On the reverse it contains the image of the golden eagle in a desert in the El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve and the Great Desert of Altar in Sonora, holding special cultural significance.

It also shines in black light, due to its special inks and fibers that react to the fluorescence.
Another security mechanism is the “MX Bills” application, which incorporates augmented reality to verify that bills are not counterfeit.

This will mark the disappearance of the only woman pictured on the Mexican currency; Frida Kahlo was changed with the updated 500 peso note. Banxico explained that “the thematic content of the new 200-peso bill has been defined by the Bank of Mexico, after working with renowned academic institutions and national research centers, in order to ensure its historical and scientific rigor.”
