Calling All Art Lovers
the Leonora Carrington Exhibition is Now Open in Centro
Right alongside the Jardin Principal, if you take a stroll inside the Tourism Office (a place many locals rarely venture into), you’ll be delighted to find an extensive art exhibition, “Recóndito Mundo.” In case you get lost, there is a massive colorful cube placed right in the road.
Once inside, you’ll find yourself in a peaceful courtyard. Proceed forward to see the two galleries. Though this is the first exhibition to be held in the space, the galleries are professionally painted and the art pieces are displayed well. The main information is written in both English and Spanish, but the specific item pieces are only in Spanish. Though, that shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying the art.
Considered by Salvador Dalí as the most important female artist of her time, Leonora Carrington Morehead was born 102 years ago in England and died at the age of 94 in Mexico City. “I did not have time to be anyone’s muse…I was too busy rebelling against my family and learning to be an artist” Having studied in Florence, England and France with quite an interesting life, she later came to Mexico and spent the following 70 years of her life here creating wonderful paintings, sculptures, textiles, graphic work, and jewelry that you can see in this exhibition.
The exhibition showcases 132 pieces of the renowned surrealist artist. Many came from the artist’s home and studio Colonia Roma in Mexico City after her death in 2011. Included are some rare photographs of her painting some of her most important works, sculptures made during the end of her career and precious metal jewelry.
The exhibition is held inside the Tourism Office, which roughly 30 years ago was in fact a jail. Until recently, the space was used as offices. The Tourism Office plans to move many of the staff to a new location, the the space for exhibitions now, and convert the space into a museum in the near future.
The project is directed by the Directorate of Culture and Traditions, in coordination with the Council of the Leonora Carrington Museum A.C.
It is open from now until July 29th from 10am-7pm daily. General admission tickets are 60 pesos, seniors & children are 30 pesos, and students are 10 pesos.
